Our unique Halishte is handmade from the wool of the Karakachan sheep. Shepherds took extra care for sheep that had long, beautiful fleece. In the ancient times halishte has been considered a luxury good and a sign of wealth. The traditional Karakachan breed of sheep was once plentiful in Bulgaria, in the beginning of the 20th century there were more than 500 000 sheep, but nowadays there are just a couple of thousand left. The wool is coarse and long, up to 40cm. Due to the thickness of the hair it is an excellent insulator. The colour changes with age becoming lighter. The wool is not dyed or bleached, resulting in each halishte being unique and different from any other. This is an authentic and truly original product that can be used as a bed cover, a blanket or a rug.
